Human Rights group slammed the appointment of Eduardo Año as
the new Officer-in-charge of the Department of Interior and Local Government
(DILG).
According to the group, his appointment will bring a “badge
to kill and arrest more” individuals.
In a statement on Tuesday, Hustisya chairperson Evangeline
Hernandez said that the newly appointed OIC has with him his “bloody record of
human rights violations” during his time with the Armed Forces of the
Philippines (AFP).
“Año will be the main implementor of a more brutal campaign
of extrajudicial killings under the Duterte government’s campaign on the war on
drugs and the arrest and crackdown of activists and progressives as part of the
counter-insurgency program,” Hernandez said.
Meanwhile, Año hits them back saying that Extrajudicial
killings will have no place under his leadership.
“I don’t believe in EJKs. It’s not a policy of the
government and we will make sure that the rights of every individual are
respected and recognized,” he said.
The newly appointed OIC also calmed the fears of some that
his presence would “militarize” the department, which holds jurisdiction to Philippine
National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and the Bureau of Jail
Management and Penology (BJMP).
“Look at the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines). When I
was the COS (chief of staff) and commanding general of the Army I only had one
policy and it’s always the premium on human rights of every Filipino,” he said.
“What they’re saying during the Marawi City crisis, so many
apprehensions, but look no violation of human rights happened.” He added.
Año vowed to work on improving the image of the Philippine
National Police as some of its members were linked to illegal drugs and EJK.
He also would look into the training and values formation of
the PNP and develop their commitment as public servants.
“In totality there is one thing we’d like to develop in the
minds of officials in the armed services – that we’re here to serve,” he said.

Those TRAPOs and non law abiding citizens you must change now or you will be sorry. General Ano is just doing his job to protect the law abiding citizens there is no EJKs in the Philippines those unknown killings are the results Rival of Illegal drug business and you charge it the government without any proof of evidence. Be fair and to the authorities and dont just bubble your mouth to spread lies that would mislead the Filipino people.
