Manila, Philippines - President Rodrigo Duterte attended the
34th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit plenary
session with other ASEAN leaders at the Athenee Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand on
Saturday.
The Chief Executive preferred to wear his formal grey suit
combo without a necktie while other ASEAN leaders favored the tradition coat
and tie outfit.
The usual simple business casual look that made him stood
out among ASEAN leaders who graced the said event and yet gave a stir among its
critics.
The 34th ASEAN Summit wrapped up yesterday with the
theme
of “Advancing Partnership for Sustainability”.
Expected agendas were discussed including pressing regional issues
like Myanmar’s Rohingya issues, where, more than 700,000 Rohingya
crossed into Bangladesh in 2017, according to U.N. agencies, after a crackdown
by Myanmar's military sparked by Rohingya insurgent attacks on security forces.
Leaders of the ASEAN nations adopted a joint declaration against
marine plastic pollution and stressed the importance of a regional trade pact
first proposed by China, and of course the South China Sea Dispute.
The countries made some progress on a Code of Conduct
negotiating draft for the disputed South China Sea and are expected to finish a
first reading by the end of this year and final reading is expected by the end
of 2021, Thailand's foreign ministry spokeswoman, Busadee Santipitaks.
President Duterte had also met with Indonesian President
Joko Widodo and Thai business leaders before the Summit’s opening ceremony.
