Outgoing Representative Gary Alejano of Magdalo Party list has
expressed disgust after hearing that the next batch of party-list solons has
aligned themselves with President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration’s wish.
“The independence of
congress just jumped out of the window” Alejano said in a facebook caption with
an attached a CNN article.
In a report by CNN Philippines, it says that the 54-member party
list coalition confirms support for whoever Duterte will choose as the new speaker
of the House.
The group’s incoming president, 1-PACMAN party-list Rep.
Mikee Romero, said it will be hard to go against Duterte’s preference for
Speaker because the lawmaker he anoints is the likely winner.
“This is a numbers game. This is the House of
Representatives. Kung anong piliin ng Presidente tingin ko naman ‘yan
rin ang mapipili dito,” Romero said Tuesday.
Earlier, Alejano already delivered his farewell speech on
the last session day of the 17th Congress but promised that he would
remain being a voice for the opposition even as a private citizen.
“I am bowing out of the 17th Congress proud of the
Magdalo team for being true to its commitment of delivering balance in Congress
as consistent voice of dissent, pushing for the advocacy of Magdalo in exposing
anomalies in government, and bridging services to our constituents,” he
said in a statement
Alejano sought for a Senate seat in the last midterm election
but failed. He is, however, proud of his accomplishments as a congressman.
“The Magdalo party-list ranked 1st in terms of number of originally authored bills and resolutions filed. We were also able to enact 27 laws in the 17th Congress, adding to our previous record of 13 enacted laws in the 16th Congress,” he said.
He also acknowledged the “challenges in the
performance of our duty in calling out the government on detrimental policies
including the EJKs under the war on drugs, Chinese incursions and abuses in the
West Philippine Sea, TRAIN Law, extension of Martial Law, and issues of
corruption in government among others.”
“The challenges include the filing of an impeachment and
ICC complaints against the President. We cannot put a blind eye to the excesses
and abuse of power,” he said.
“Lastly, even as a private citizen, which starts on the
noon of June 30, I will continue to fight for the Filipino people and our
country in every opportunity,” he added
If recalled, Alejano filed an impeachment case in 2017
against the President concerning the alleged EJKs, and being subservient to
China, but the impeachment case was dismissed by the justice committee.
