Manila, Philippines - Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso announced on Monday that he wants the new Ospital ng Maynila to be better than other prestigious hospitals like Makati Medical Center and St. Luke's.

For Yorme Isko, if the new Manila Hospital is not better than Makati Medical Center and St. Luke's, it won't pass for his standard.

"Basta 'pag ang Ospital ng Maynila tinayo natin at hindi naging mas maganda kaysa sa Makati Medical Center at St. Luke’s, hindi papasa sa'kin," he said in a speech during public doctors, nurses, and medical staff in the city.

Mayor Isko said it is government's duty to provide the best care for its constituents until their last breath.

"Ang isang mahirap na tao makaramdam man lamang ng tunay na pagkalinga (mula) sa kaniyang pamahalaan kahit sa huling hininga niya," he said.

He continued: “And that’s why our goal subliminally is the facility na mararamdaman man lang ng isang mahirap na tao na hanggang sa huling sandali, nakatikim man lang siya ng konting kaginhawaan sa buhay bago man lang pumikit ang kanyang mga mata.”

That's our goal, to make them feel that a public hospital should not look like one. Even though it's a public hospital, it could look like St. Luke's

"Yun ang goal natin, maiparamdam natin sa kaniya na hindi kailangan ang public hospital, public hospital din ang hitsura. Pwede siyang public hospital pero ang hitsura niya St. Luke’s." Isko added.

"Sapagkat hindi biro magtayo ng ospital, dingding, sahig lang eh bakit di pa natin itodo. So build it better, build the best. Ayaw niyo ba 'yung pasyente ninyo hanggang sa huling hininga nakikita niya dapat ‘ayos, malamig.’" he said

Mayor Isko also said the 50-year-old hospital will be renovated and redesigned as a fully air-conditioned, state-of-the-art medical facility by the bay.

While the old Antonio Villegas building will be retained but converted to house the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila's College of Medicine.

Apart from OsMa, at least 60 health centers in the capital city are also set for renovation, while the city government will also buy 6 new ambulances.

“I know the feeling na walang pera nanay mo, naglalabada, kinakapos dahil ang daming nagkakasakit. I was there and I know the feeling,” said Moreno, who grew up as a scavenger.

Mayor Isko added, he is willing to spend a big amount on health care. “There’s no amount of enough money with regard to the value of life that we can save,” he said.
