Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) director-general Nicanor
Faeldon has caused exasperation among some lawmakers over the release of
hein0us crime convicts for supposed good behavior.
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian was one who expressed anger
on what happened under Faeldon’s watch as prisons chief.
“I don’t know what to say sa galit ko!” the senator tweeted.
“Pinalabas ni Faeldon ang P6.4 worth of illegal drgs sa
BOC, ngayon naman, pinalabas niya isang rapst sa BuCOR. Bakit na sa gobyerno pa
itong tao na ito,” he added.
According to ABS CBN’s report, Faeldon on Monday attended a
Senate inquiry over the alleged questionable application of the good conduct
time allowance law.
The Senators want to question the BuCor chief as well as the
other Bilibid officials over the supposed release of Antonio Sanchez and the
early release of more than 1,900 heinous-crme convicts from 2014 to 2019.
Earlier, Faeldon said Sanchez’s release from prison was based
on good conduct time allowance, a penal act that allows long-time convicts to
be freed depending on their behavior in prison.
He later on backtracked his statement after the public’s
uproar and said that Sanchez was not qualified to get released due to several
offense.
Documents also surfaced online, showing a released order of Sanchez
signed by Faeldon dated August 20, 2019.
With this, several senators have called on President Rodrigo
Duterte to sack Faeldon and not let him handle another public office position
again.
