While welcoming the resignation of Philippine National
Police (PNP) Chief Police General Oscar Albayalde, lawmakers investigating the
issue said on Monday it should not be the end of the issue involving
"ninja cops".
Opposition Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan was saddened by
General Oscar Albayalde’s decision to give up his post amid the controversy
over so-called “ninja cops” issue.
In a statement Monday (Oct. 13), Sen. Pangilinan observed
that erring government officials left their posts amid controversies and just to
free them from the issue by the administration.
Former government officials who left their posts amid disputes,
such as former Bureau of Corrections chief Nicanor Faeldon, Technical Education
and Skills Development Authority chief Isidro Lapeña, former Justice Secretary
Vitaliano Aguirre II, former Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo and former
National
Food Authority administrator Jason Aquino.
Despite Duterte’s war against criminality, Pangilinan criticized
the government for supposedly treating government officials involved in illegal
activities and corruption with leniency.
“Unti-unti nang lumalabas ang katotohanan na habang
araw-araw ang patayan ng mahihirap, araw-araw rin ang pagkonsinti ng
administrasyong ito sa mga sangkot sa katiwalian, ‘ninja cops’, at pagpapalusot
o pag-recycle ng iligal na droga.” he said.
“Kaya patuloy ang pang-aabuso sa pwesto: dahil hindi naman
pinaparusahan ang malalaking taong nagkakasala. Actually, ni-re-recycle pa.
Yung walang kalaban-laban lang ang kinakaya-kaya,” he added.
With Albayalde’s decision to step down, Pangilinan said: “He
and all the rest should be charged for at the very least enriching themselves
using their government office — regardless of their having resigned.”
Albayalde gave up his position
just weeks ahead of his mandatory retirement on November 8 amid indictments
that he protected 13 policemen who were ordered dismissed for supposedly
reselling illegal drugs seized from anti-drug operations in Pampanga in 2013
when he was the chief of Pampanga Police.
Oscar David Albayalde is a police officer who served as the Chief of the Philippine National Police from April 2018 to October 2019. He is known to be a "Dark Horse" for being strict and being an outsider in President Duterte's Inner Circle.
