Senador Ping Lacson at Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte / Larawan mula sa ABS CBN |
Senator Panfilo Lacson posted
on his Twitter account on how he is impressed with President Duterte’s
capability in dealing with suspected delinquent bilyonaryos.
The senator tweeted “One of
the great things only President Duterte is capable of doing all by himself,”
Lacson was triggered by the
comment after Manila Water and Maynilad dropped its arbitral win against the
Philippine government.
The two companies will no
longer collect P11 billion compensation from the government despite an
arbitration ruling by a Singapore-based court.
Manila Water President and Chief Executive Officer Jose Rene
Almendras told lawmakers during a hearing at the House of Representatives that
they would no longer implement the November arbitration ruling that compelled
the government to pay them P7.4 billion.
“Opo sir, susunod po kami sa kagustuhan ng gobyerno, at ng
Pangulo,”
Almendras said when asked if Manila Water will not pursue their damage claim for
their unimplemented water rate adjustments before.
In the same way, Mr. Ramoncito Fernandez, Maynilad President and CEO made the same undertaking about the 2017 arbitral decision that also asked the government to pay them P3.4 billion. and said that they will not demand about the payment from the government.

“Na-award po ang arbitral award sa Maynilad nung 2017 pa po. After we have followed up the government, nung hindi ho kami binibigyan ng pansin, hindi na ho kami nagpursigi,” Fernandez said.
“Ngayon po… ire-reiterate po namin na sang-ayon po kami sa direktiba ng Presidente, ‘wag na ho naming habulin ‘yung historical award sa amin,” the Maynilad President added.
The two giant water companies angered President Duterte after Manila Water won its case against the government before the Permanent Court of Arbitration for blocking its water rate hikes.
The President insisted that the government would not honor the two rulings and threatened to sue the two water concessionaires after Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said the contracts awarded to them contained“onerous provisions.”
