Human rights lawyer Chel Diokno calls out the police for coming after the ordinary Filipinos critical of President Rodrigo Duterte.
Diokno shared
his opinion on May 14 after a salesman was arrested by authorities over threats
against the president.
“Pano
Diokno said
The lawyer
also pointed out that even the president himself has publicly criticized and
cursed the Pope and clergies.
He also
reminded the Philippine National Police (PNP) that their job is to protect the
Filipinos not the president.
Police
arrested a salesman in Agusan del Norte province after he cursed at President
Duterte in a social media post.
Reynaldo
Orcullo, 41, from Nasipit town, is the fourth person arrested by authorities
over threatening online posts against the chief executive.
Earlier, a
teacher in Zambales, a construction worker in Aklan and a woman in Cebu after
they offered a supposed reward of P50 million to P100 million for those who
would kill Mr. Duterte were also arrested by the police.
Police
Brig. Gen. Joselito Esquivel Jr., Caraga police director, explained that Orcullo
posted alleged libellous statements, prompting his arrest for violating the
Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 10175).
“Alam na
pattern, mosalida si Go konuhay siya mohangyo sa buang nga Pangulo, Digong
gago. Buang si Digong (We know the pattern, [Sen. Bong] Go would put up a show
asking the crazy President. Digong is stupid. Digong is crazy).” Orcullo’s post
