De Lima fires back at Sotto: ‘Act of cowardice’ for Tito Sotto to say Ferdinand Marcos holiday bill local in scope

Hindi pinalampas ni senadora Leila De Lima si Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III matapos nitong sabihin na ang panukalang batas na nagdeklara ng holiday sa Setyembre 11 sa Ilocos Norte upang igalang ang yumaong dating pangulo na si Ferdinand Marcos ay makakalusot sa Senado.

Ayon sa kanyang pahayag, sinabi ni De Lima na ang mga panukalang batas na kinasasangkutan ng mga nakaraang pangulo ay "laging may pambansang kahalagahan."

“Treating House Bill No. 7137 on the Ferdinand Marcos Day as fait accompli for being a local bill and merely having local application is an act of cowardice that glosses over a dark part of our history and blots out the memory of an entire generation that suffered at the hands of an ignominious dictator,” aniya

Nauna nang sinabi ni Sotto na ang panukalang batas, na ipinasa kamakailan ng House of Representatives sa pangatlo at huling pagbasa, ay malamang maprobahan din ng Senado. 

Gayunpaman, sinabi ni De Lima na walang kahalagahan na gunitain ang kaarawan ni Marcos.

“To commemorate a public figure is to venerate or emulate his exemplary qualities. Ano ang tutularan sa isang diktador? Ang mang-abuso, magnakaw at pumatay?”  tanong ng senadora

Aniya, kahihiyan din ng mga Ilocano na alalahanin si Marcos sa pamamagitan ng holiday sa kabila ng pagiging malupit umano ng dating pangulo.

“The opportunist move of distorting history achieves nothing but to further add insult to injury, to further offend and abuse the memories of the generation that survived the Marcos tyranny, and ignite people’s pent-up fury. Wrong move!”  ayon kay de lima

Sa isang panayam sa CNN Philippines nitong Huwebes sinabi ni Sotto na duda siya kung mayroong pagtutol sa upper chamber dahil ito ay panukalang lokal lang naman.

“A bill of local application when it comes to the Senate, usually is not really debated upon. It is a bill of local application, it is for Ilocos Norte, I doubt if there will be objections to that,” paliwanag ni Sotto

“If it is nationwide, baka magkakaroon ng objection yan, medyo mahihirapan ‘yan. For us, it is not a matter of whether we are going to support it or not. Usually, bills of local application breeze through the Senate unless one or two objects,” dagdag ng senador
